A Summer Fate - English Sinfonia at the Elgiva

English Sinfonia return to The Elgiva with Tchaikovsky’s epic Fifth Symphony alongside Copland’s thrilling Appalachian Spring.

Written for choreographer and dancer Martha Graham, Copland’s joyful ballet score tells a simple but emotional tale – a celebration of love, nature and pioneering spirit.

In this 15-player version of Tchaikovsky’s engrossing musical journey we find dance too in good measure, and a profound and powerful reflection on desire, conflict and fate.

Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann had a complicated relationship built on friendship and love, and they are brought together in this concert with sensational piano trios from both composers alongside other works for trio by Philip Glass and Frank Bridge.

A Jubilant Enigma

English Sinfonia continue their residency at The Elgiva with a Summer concert celebrating the Platinum Jubilee year of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Elgiva is proud to welcome back the renowned chamber orchestra English Sinfonia with their artistic director Janice Graham leading from the violin and principal conductor Chris Hopkins beginning a brand new season of live concerts at The Elgiva.

The English Sinfonia is delighted for the first concert of the season to be a celebration of strings, with pieces including the ever popular Barber’s ‘Adagio for Strings’, Grieg’s ‘Holberg Suite’, and ‘Palladio’ by Karl Jenkins, alongside works for string ensemble by Gipps, Elgar and more.
