Join English Sinfonia in chamber form for a delightful programme which includes two of Mozart’s most well-loved concertos in arrangement for string quintet and soloists: his rambunctious Violin Concerto no. 5 and beautiful Piano Concerto no. 23.

Some of the finest string players in the country come together this December under Principal Conductor Chris Hopkins to play Dvorak’s uplifting ‘Serenade for Strings’ alongside Dag Wiren’s popular Serenade, heart-warming string miniatures from Grieg, festive music, and Dvorak’s beautiful ‘Romance’ for violin.

A Summer Fate - English Sinfonia at the Elgiva
English Sinfonia return to The Elgiva with Tchaikovsky’s epic Fifth Symphony alongside Copland’s thrilling Appalachian Spring.
Written for choreographer and dancer Martha Graham, Copland’s joyful ballet score tells a simple but emotional tale – a celebration of love, nature and pioneering spirit.
In this 15-player version of Tchaikovsky’s engrossing musical journey we find dance too in good measure, and a profound and powerful reflection on desire, conflict and fate.

A Musical Romance
Members of the English Sinfonia continue their residency at The Elgiva with a programme of gorgeous music for piano trio.
Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann had a complicated relationship built on friendship and love, and they are brought together in this concert with sensational piano trios from both composers alongside other works for trio by Philip Glass and Frank Bridge.
Join English Sinfonia’s Artistic Director and leader, Janice Graham, cellist Julia Graham, and Principal Conductor Chris Hopkins for a mesmerising evening of live music.
Peter and the Wolf
English Sinfonia continue their residency at the Elgiva with our Christmas concert featuring Prokofiev’s Peter and The Wolf, and other Christmas themed music still to be announced.

Following the fantastic audience reception to the performance of their summer concert, the English Sinfonia continue their residency with an Autumn concert.

A Jubilant Enigma
English Sinfonia continue their residency at The Elgiva with a Summer concert celebrating the Platinum Jubilee year of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The concert will present music that would have been heard in the year of the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 alongside a World Premiere of Nicholas Korth’s ‘Jubilare – An Enigmatic Fanfare’, all culminating in Elgar’s incomparable Enigma Variations.

Into The Night Sky
The English Sinfonia embarks on a voyage into the night sky, with a programme featuring Holst’s monumental and awe-inspiring work The Planets, alongside Mozart’s own serenade to the night Eine kleine Nachtmusik, and Vaughan Williams’ ethereal and beautiful The Lark Ascending.
A Winter Wonderland
A festive feast of music including carols (with audience participation strongly advised!) and everything from Corelli to Tchaikovsky, Elgar, Holst, Ireland as well as Howard Blake’s beloved ‘Walking In The Air’ from The Snowman.

String Awakening
The Elgiva is proud to welcome back the renowned chamber orchestra English Sinfonia with their artistic director Janice Graham leading from the violin and principal conductor Chris Hopkins beginning a brand new season of live concerts at The Elgiva.
The English Sinfonia is delighted for the first concert of the season to be a celebration of strings, with pieces including the ever popular Barber’s ‘Adagio for Strings’, Grieg’s ‘Holberg Suite’, and ‘Palladio’ by Karl Jenkins, alongside works for string ensemble by Gipps, Elgar and more.
A Seasons Finale
Here the English Sinfonia present two major concertos which celebrate the full virtuosity of both the piano and the violin. First, Beethoven’s beautiful Fourth Piano Concerto, in an intimate arrangement for piano and string quintet; followed by Vivaldi’s thrilling Four Seasons directed from the violin by Janice Graham.

Epic Fantasy
From the previous concert which explored the music of the Piano Trio, the ensemble now turns to the Piano Quartet. This concert presents an epic musical journey from the tango-driven music of Piazzolla, to the fantastical worlds of Bax and Bridge before ending with Brahms’ magical Piano Quartet in C minor.

A mix of repertoire which celebrates the versatility and impact of the Piano Trio. From Nyman through to Amy Beach, Mendelssohn and Piazzolla, the English Sinfonia demonstrates why this classic combination of instruments continues to be such a popular choice for composers and audiences alike.
